Sul Ross Theatre of the Big Bend Marks 60 Years with Dual Summer Musicals

Theatre of the Big Bend, Sul Ross State University’s summer theatre program, is celebrating its 60th anniversary with two contrasting musical productions: the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Next to Normal” and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella.”

“Next to Normal,” a contemporary rock musical by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, runs June 20–22 at the Francois Fine Arts Building Studio Theatre. The show explores themes of mental illness, grief, and resilience through the lens of a suburban family, with performances at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday.

“Cinderella,” a family-friendly musical based on the classic fairytale, opens July 5 and runs Thursday through Sunday until July 20 at the Kokernot Outdoor Theatre. All performances begin at 8 p.m.

Theatre of the Big Bend was founded in 1965 through a partnership between Sul Ross faculty, students, and Alpine community members. Over the past three years, it has transitioned into a professional repertory and training program for theatre students, while maintaining its community roots.

“This 60th anniversary production feels like a reunion,” said Bret Scott, director of “Cinderella” and associate professor of cinematic arts. “It’s sweet, it’s funny, it’s magical and you’ll go home humming the tunes.”

“Cinderella” features Sul Ross students, alumni, local performers, and theatre professionals.

“Next to Normal” offers a deeper dive into contemporary issues. “There’s still a lot of tiptoeing around the subject of mental illness,” said Marjie Scott, director of the production and chair of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. “This show dives in and explores the unpredictability and pain, and even humor, of it.”

Tickets for “Next to Normal” are $15 for general admission and $10 for seniors (65+) and children (12 and under). “Cinderella” tickets are $20 for general admission and $15 for seniors and children. Admission to all performances is free for U.S. veterans, active-duty military, and SRSU faculty, staff, and students with valid ID.
