Fort Davis National Historic Site Offers Free Activity-Based Education Programs for School Field Trips

Teachers planning school field trips can take advantage of free, engaging educational programs at Fort Davis National Historic Site, tailored for students from kindergarten to high school. These programs incorporate hands-on learning experiences that align with state education standards while promoting critical thinking skills.

Plan Ahead
To schedule a visit, educators must call 432-426-3224 ext. 226 and provide the desired date and time, preferred activity-based program, and the number of students and sponsors (a minimum of one sponsor per 10 students). An educational fee waiver must also be mailed or faxed to the site ahead of time.

Prepare for Your Visit
Teachers are encouraged to divide students into small groups (ideally 3-5 students per group) before arrival to maximize the quality of their experience. Given the high elevation and varying weather conditions at Fort Davis, visitors should dress appropriately and wear good walking shoes. Closeable water bottles are highly recommended, as bottled water is not sold on-site.

Programs Available
The park offers several activity-based programs designed to engage students in interdisciplinary learning:

  • Footsteps Through the Fort (Grades 3-12): A two-hour program emphasizing social studies, math, and science through hands-on, real-world problem-solving activities.
  • Scavenger Hunt (Grades K-12): A one-hour exploration of historic structures to identify unique items from the 1800s.
  • Touch the Past (Grades K-5): A 1.5-hour immersive experience using historical artifacts to connect students with the past.
  • Historic Native Plants (Grades 4-6): A two-hour lesson on the historical uses of native plants, culminating in a scavenger hunt.

Additional resources include traveling trunks filled with lesson plans and historical artifacts, available for schools within 100 miles of the park. Teachers can also purchase a park history video at a discounted rate to show students in advance.

Upon Arrival
Groups should arrive 15-20 minutes early for check-in and organization. A short orientation will be provided by a park ranger or volunteer, ensuring a structured and informative visit.
