Sul Ross State University has released the schedule for its Fall 2024 series of Guided Hikes on Hancock Hill. Each hike is led by a Subject Matter Expert (SME) from the university and offers participants the opportunity to learn about the history of Alpine and Sul Ross State, as well as the natural history of Hancock Hill, all while enjoying scenic views.
The 1.8-mile hikes, considered moderately strenuous, begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday mornings and last approximately two hours.
The fall schedule includes the following hikes:
- Sept. 14: “Trail Work Day” – Participants will volunteer to pick up trash, trim trail vegetation, remove goatheads, and repair structures. Tools and supplies will be provided.
- Oct. 5: “Archaeology of the Big Bend” – Led by Dr. Bryon Schroeder from the Center for Big Bend Studies.
- Nov. 23: “Arthike for Artwalk” – Details to be announced.
- Dec. 7: “Big Bend Bears” – Led by Matt Hewit and Caitlin Pappas from the Borderlands Research Institute.
Each hike is free and open to the public, but space is limited to 12 participants per event. Reservations are required and can be made online at www.sulross.edu/guided-hikes.
The Hancock Hill Guided Hikes series is a collaborative effort among the Borderlands Research Institute, the Center for Big Bend Studies, the Rio Grande Research Center, and the Department of Geology.
