Graydon Hicks, Superintendent of Fort Davis ISD, issued a statement on social media clarifying recent concerns regarding a potential safety threat to area schools. The post, shared on the official Fort Davis Indians page, aimed to address inaccuracies and provide transparency following the events of the previous night and morning.
In his message, Hicks clarified that the decision to send emergency alerts to parents and staff rests solely with him. “I, alone, determine whether to send out emergency alerts to our parents and staff. That is not a Board decision,” he stated. While he consults with Board members on such matters, the final decision is his responsibility.
Hicks explained that the decision not to send an earlier alert was based on the lack of credible or specific threats. “I did not believe the threat to be genuine and emergent. No law enforcement called me, no messages from Region 18, and nothing on our new statewide safety communication system (Sentinel). Nothing specific to Fort Davis, or even this three-town area,” he said. He emphasized his reluctance to cause unnecessary panic without sufficient information.
After an initial message was sent, Hicks received confidential information that confirmed his earlier assessment, though it came after his second Facebook post. He noted that further posting of the same information would not have been beneficial.
Hicks acknowledged parents’ frustrations over the perceived lack of communication, admitting, “In retrospect, I should have sent that information in a text alert to our parents.” He expressed his understanding of differing opinions but reiterated that his priority is always the safety of students and staff.
“The safety of my kids and staff is the MOST important job I have,” Hicks wrote, assuring the community of his commitment to their well-being. He concluded by inviting any concerned individuals to schedule an appointment to discuss their feelings directly with him.
For further updates and to stay informed, parents and community members are encouraged to follow Fort Davis ISD’s social media channels and reach out to Superintendent Hicks with any concerns.
