Old Sheriffs Museum and Research Center Opens in Fort Davis

The Old Sheriffs Museum and Research Center has opened its doors, offering visitors a glimpse into the rich history of law enforcement in West Texas. Located by the Jeff Davis County Courthouse in the recently refurbished Old Jail, the museum features a collection of donated items and artifacts that document the history of sheriffs in the region.

Exhibits at the museum highlight the contributions of local law enforcement, including Texas Rangers and local ranchers, in developing state and national parks and protecting local communities. The Old Sheriffs Museum and Research Center aims to create a space to remember, respect, and understand the early law enforcement of Jeff Davis, Brewster, and Presidio counties. The museum showcases pictures, artifacts, and stories donated by families of those who have served these communities since the 1800s.

In addition to the exhibits, the museum provides a research center for students and researchers interested in the history of the West Texas frontier and its law enforcement.

For those interested in donating funds or artifacts or volunteering to help with research, more information is available on their website, TheOldSheriffsMuseum.org, or via email at Info@TheOldSheriffsMuseum.org. Donations can also be mailed to The Old Sheriffs Museum, PO Box 1035, Fort Davis, TX 79734.

The museum aims to preserve the legacy of law enforcement in West Texas for the Tri-County area and the Trans Pecos region.
