Sul Ross State University Hosts 7th Annual Science of STEM Literacy Conference

The La Frontera Research Initiative at Sul Ross State University will host the 7th Annual Science of STEM Literacy Conference on Monday, July 22. The event will take place in the Morelock Academic Building from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with lunch provided for registered attendees.

This year’s theme, “Lighting Pathways Toward STEM Literacy Success,” aims to inspire and educate students, faculty, staff, educators, and STEM education outreach professionals.

The keynote speaker, Mitzi Adams, brings extensive experience from her tenure at NASA, where she began working in March 1988. Adams’ research has focused on solar phenomena, utilizing data from the Solar Dynamics Observatory and the Hinode satellite to study solar jets and flares. Her career includes significant contributions to the Solar X-ray Imager on the GOES-12 spacecraft and extensive outreach work through the Fernbank Science Center and the Von Braun Astronomical Society. Adams currently serves as the Assistant Manager for the Heliophysics and Planetary Branch of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.

Additional presentations will feature Dr. Michelle Rinehart, superintendent of Alpine ISD; the Citizen CATE team for the total eclipse in Eagle Pass, including Noyce Scholar Andrea Rivera, Alejandra Martinez, and Bobby Greeson; Dr. Chris Ritzi and Noyce Scholars Halie Fox and Jose Gloria; and Nadine Mannhart from the Literacy Coalition of the Permian Basin.
