Alpine ISD Leaders Address Underfunding Issues at TASB Summer Leadership Institute

Last month, Alpine ISD Board Member Mrs. Mary McCallister and Superintendent Dr. Michelle Rinehart presented to a packed audience at the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Summer Leadership Institute in San Antonio.

In collaboration with colleagues from Orange Grove ISD, Alpine ISD leaders discussed the persistent underfunding affecting over 150 Texas school districts due to disputes between County Appraisal Districts (CAD) and the State Comptroller. This issue results in a significant shortfall for Alpine ISD, amounting to $980,000 per year, or approximately 10% of the district’s state allotment.

The presentation provided an overview of the causes and impacts of this underfunding, highlighting the financial strain it places on affected school districts. It also explored actionable steps that school districts and board members can take to advocate for legislative solutions to this pressing issue.
