The Marathon Public Library has embarked on an exciting new chapter with the commencement of its expansion project. Announced via their Facebook page, the library shared, “If you’ve been by the library recently, you may have noticed some exciting activity. Earlier this year, we officially broke ground on our library expansion! Soon, we will have the much-needed extra space for books, programs, and other community needs. We can’t wait for y’all to see it!”
This expansion comes on the heels of national recognition. Marathon Public Library, the smallest accredited library in Texas, received an Honorable Mention from Library Journal as part of their “Best Small Library in America 2023 Honorable Mentions” list. This accolade highlights the library’s significant growth and its impact on the community.
Over the past decade, the library has seen a remarkable increase in annual visits, skyrocketing from 841 to 13,623. This growth is a testament to the library’s dedication to serving its community, promoting education, and fostering enrichment.
The expansion, funded partly by a $1 million gift from the Prentice Farrar Brown and Alline Ford Brown Foundation, is part of the Heart of Marathon campaign. This $2+ million initiative aims to enhance the library and revitalize the Marathon History Museum. The new library will feature expanded spaces for books, programs, and community activities, including an adult reading room, dedicated areas for infants, children, and teens, increased computer workstations, and a multi-purpose community room.
As the library breaks ground on this significant project, it continues to uphold its vision of connecting, inspiring, and empowering the Marathon community.
