Lobos Dominate in 49-7 Victory Over Austin College Kangaroos

The Sul Ross State football team secured another win, besting the Austin College Kangaroos 49-7 at Jerry E. Apple Stadium. With this win, the Lobos have now extended their winning streak to three games.

During the match, Vicente Luevano sparked the game’s momentum by returning a punt for a 74-yard touchdown in the first quarter, positioning the Lobos at a 7-0 lead. Quincy Blair’s interception disrupted the Kangaroos’ next offensive, giving Sul Ross State an advantageous position on the Austin College seven-yard line.

The Lobos continued their dominating performance in the second quarter. Andrew Martinez, with a touchdown run and a 14:53 clock, further pushed the score. Rodd Hudson III’s one-yard touchdown run extended the lead to 21-0 just before halftime. Austin College managed to score a 27-yard touchdown pass, but the Lobos promptly retaliated, closing the first half at 28-7.

The Lobos’ offense came out strong after the break, with Martinez throwing an 18-yard touchdown pass to Ahmonte Kendrick. As the game approached its end, the Lobos’ offense showcased its potency by securing two more touchdowns, cementing their triumphant win.

Statistics from the game demonstrate the Lobos’ dominance, with 23 first downs and 396 total yards of offense. Martinez had an impressive performance, finishing 12 of 19 with 161 passing yards and one touchdown, along with 65 rushing yards from 11 carries and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, Kendrick finished with four catches, accumulating 86 yards and one touchdown.

Defensively, the Lobos also made a mark with Jade Rios registering nine total tackles, six solo tackles, and one tackle for loss. The defense recorded three sacks, four forced fumbles, one interception, and five tackles for loss.

Head coach Barry Derickson expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, “It was a great bounce back win after last week. We are holding our guys to a higher standard. A good step in the right direction in preparation for next week versus a really good UMHB opponent.”

Historically, the Lobos have had a 21-23-2 record against Austin College since their first game in 1976. Notably, in the last two meetings, Sul Ross State has outscored Austin College 104-21.

The Lobos are now gearing up for their next game against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, scheduled for 1 p.m. CST on Saturday, Oct. 14 in Belton, Texas.
