The cultural landscape of Marfa shimmered with a new vibrancy last night, as the Thunderbird Hotel launched a distinguished exhibition showcasing artworks by Mexico City’s celebrated artists, Manuel Gilardi and Ximena Alarcón. The art-filled evening, which commenced at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 6, was further illuminated with an electric live performance by the New York City-based band, Public Speaking.

Gilardi, who harnesses digital methods to sculpt his art pieces, offered visitors a glimpse into his intricate compositions. These modern pieces found a serene counterpart in Alarcón’s traditional tapestries, where geometric designs ruled the roost. A unique touch to the exhibition was the outdoor display of artworks, where the Marfa breezes and the ethereal light interacted harmoniously with the pieces.
A deep dive into Alarcón’s background reveals a multi-faceted artist. Born in CDMX in 1968, she embarked on her artistic journey with a focus on fashion, earning her stripes at the Marangoni Institute in Milan. Her passion took a detour upon her return to Mexico, drawing her towards sculpture and plastic arts. By 2002, Alarcón further broadened her horizons, opening a workshop in Paris, where she melded jewelry design with a sculptural-spatial vision through her XAC project.

The depth and breadth of Alarcón’s sculptural work are evident. Her pieces, oscillating between geometric and organic forms, delve into notions of space and volume. But her artworks go beyond just form and aesthetics; they are powerful narratives on issues of social inequality, gender dynamics, racism, and empathy.
Alarcón’s resume boasts exhibitions at prominent venues spanning Mexico, Peru, Japan, and the U.S. Her artistic genius is also reflected in the notable collections she’s a part of, including the Sebastián Foundation. Currently, she’s represented by the Quetzalli gallery in Mexico and holds the distinguished title of founder and curator of Casa Meridia Contemporary.
Art aficionados who couldn’t make it to the opening need not fret. The exquisite world of Gilardi and Alarcón will remain on display at the Thunderbird Hotel from October 6-18, beckoning all to experience a slice of Mexico City’s artistry in Marfa.
