Alpine Varsity Tennis Takes on Monahans in Spring Matchup

Alpine High School’s varsity tennis team faced off against Class 4A Monahans in a non-district spring matchup Tuesday, March 25, at Fort Stockton High School. The meet delivered several competitive matches as Alpine athletes tested their skills against tough opponents.

Girls Singles:
Alpine’s No. 1, Megan Struthers, had a standout day, defeating Monahans’ top player, L. Espadas, in a split-set thriller (6-1, 3-6, 10-5). Struthers also notched a dominant 8-0 pro set win over A. Barriga.
Andynne Ramirez, Alpine’s No. 2, picked up a solid 6-0, 6-1 win over J. Pacheco before falling 3-8 in a pro set to Espadas. Her quick footwork and strong baseline play were noted as strengths heading into district competition.

Boys Singles:
Mustafa Gunes dropped both of his matches, falling to J. Jackson (1-6, 0-6) and J. Mendoza (5-8).

Girls Doubles:
Shanna Tamale and Jaylynn Celaya fell in straight sets to both Barriga/Barriga (2-6, 2-6) and Adamson/Renteria (2-6).
Gabriella Dominguez and Julianna Kinkade also fell to Adamson/Renteria (4-6, 3-6) and then dropped a tough 0-8 pro set to Barriga/Barriga.

Boys Doubles:
Solanus Prieto and Zane Wash competed closely with Monahans’ top team Guerrero/Inman, dropping two hard-fought sets (4-6, 3-6).
Alpine’s No. 2 team split sets with Hix/Mendoza (6-4, 2-6) before falling in the tie break (7-10), and later dropped a 7-9 pro set to Guerrero/Inman.

Mixed Doubles:
Mariana Palazuelos and Marco Salcido secured a win in their match, taking an 8-6 pro set victory over Monahans’ Jackson/Pacheco.

Coach Martinez noted that the team continues to improve with each match and is looking forward to fine-tuning strategy and execution before district play.
