A strong thunderstorm capable of producing wind gusts up to 55 mph, penny-size hail and torrential rainfall was moving through southwestern Brewster and southeastern Presidio counties Thursday evening, according to the National Weather Service.
Terlingua Fire and EMS shared a special weather statement issued by the National Weather Service office in Midland/Odessa at 7:59 p.m. Thursday.
Doppler radar showed the storm about 7 miles northwest of Lajitas at the time the statement was issued. It was moving north at about 20 mph.
The weather service said Lajitas, Terlingua, Study Butte and the Barton Warnock Environmental Education Center were among the locations that could be affected. The special weather statement was in effect through 8:45 p.m.
Wind gusts of 50 to 55 mph could knock down tree limbs and send unsecured objects airborne, while penny-size hail could cause minor damage to vegetation, according to the weather service.
Torrential rainfall accompanying the storm could also cause localized flooding.
Officials advised people outdoors to consider seeking shelter inside a building and warned motorists not to drive through flooded roadways.
