Presidio County sheriff’s deputies recovered a pickup reported stolen in California during a traffic stop on U.S. 67, according to the Presidio County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies conducting enhanced patrols stopped a 2022 GMC Sierra for invalid license plates, the sheriff’s office said. During the stop, deputies determined the truck had been reported stolen in California.
Investigators believe the vehicle was being taken to Mexico through the Presidio port of entry using fictitious title and vehicle documents, according to the sheriff’s office.
The agency said deputies are working with law enforcement agencies across state lines to investigate the theft and identify others who may have been involved.
The driver was identified by the sheriff’s office as Oscar Cortez, 48, described by the agency as a Guatemalan transmigrant driver.
Cortez may face a charge of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and other offenses as the investigation continues, the sheriff’s office said. No final charging determination was announced.
The Presidio County Sheriff’s Office said the recovery was made as part of its ongoing proactive patrol efforts throughout the county.
