A lost hiker was safely rescued near Lajitas after suffering from dehydration and heat exposure, Terlingua Fire & EMS said.
Emergency personnel responded Sept. 11 to a report of a missing hiker in a remote area near the community. A Brewster County sheriff’s deputy located the hiker and constructed an improvised shade shelter to protect the person from the extreme heat while awaiting emergency medical personnel.
Employees from Lajitas assisted responders by using all-terrain vehicles to reach the remote location and evacuate the hiker.
Terlingua Fire & EMS personnel evaluated and treated the hiker for dehydration and heat exposure. The individual was later released.
The department thanked the Brewster County Sheriff’s Office and Lajitas employees for assisting with the rescue.
With high temperatures continuing across the Big Bend, emergency officials urged hikers to carry plenty of water, begin hikes early, avoid the hottest afternoon hours and tell someone their planned route. Officials also advised visitors to recognize the symptoms of dehydration and other heat-related illnesses.
