Alpine Independent School District Superintendent Michelle Rinehart has been named one of five state finalists for the 2026 Texas Superintendent of the Year award.
Rinehart was selected from 16 regional winners from across Texas. She represents Region 18 in the statewide competition.
The Texas Association of School Boards said the state selection committee recognized Rinehart for resourceful, disciplined and innovative leadership, particularly her work navigating complex financial challenges in one of the state’s lowest-funded school districts while expanding opportunities and improving outcomes for students.
Rinehart has served as Alpine ISD superintendent since 2022. During her tenure, the district has worked to strengthen teaching and learning, invest in educators, improve facilities and expand early childhood opportunities.
The district also has secured millions of dollars in grants and philanthropic support while emphasizing responsible financial management.
Alpine ISD said the statewide recognition reflects the work taking place throughout the rural West Texas district and demonstrates that a small school system can compete alongside districts from across the state.
The Texas Association of School Boards has presented the Superintendent of the Year award since 1984. The program recognizes superintendents for leadership, student performance, fiscal management, relationships with school boards and communities, advocacy for public education and innovation.
The 2026 Texas Superintendent of the Year will be announced Oct. 10 during txEDCON in Houston.
