Visitors to Davis Mountains State Park will have a chance to discover some of the region’s nighttime wildlife during two free “mothing” events this weekend.
Texas Master Naturalists will host the programs Saturday, Aug. 15, and Sunday, Aug. 16, from 9 to 11 p.m. at the Davis Mountains State Park amphitheater.
Mothing is a method of attracting moths and other nocturnal insects so they can be observed up close. Organizers will hang a white sheet and use an ultraviolet light source to attract moths to the viewing area.
The event offers visitors an opportunity to see insects that can easily go unnoticed during daytime visits to the park and learn more about the diversity of wildlife found in the Davis Mountains.
No binoculars, special equipment or previous experience are required.
The program is free, and visitors may come and go during the two-hour event.
The Davis Mountains and surrounding areas of Far West Texas are known for dark night skies and diverse wildlife, making nighttime programs an opportunity to experience a side of the region that visitors may not encounter during the day.
The mothing programs are scheduled from 9 to 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Davis Mountains State Park amphitheater.
