A report of a masked man carrying a rifle prompted a multiagency law enforcement response Wednesday afternoon in Alpine before officers discovered the armed man was a deputy U.S. marshal serving a warrant.
According to the Brewster County Sheriff’s Office, deputies, Alpine police officers and Sul Ross State University police responded to a 911 call reporting a masked man with a rifle near Ninth Street and Uvalde Avenue.
When local officers arrived, they encountered deputy U.S. marshals who were serving a warrant in the area.
Authorities investigated the report and determined that one of the masked deputy marshals was the person the caller had seen and reported to 911.
The sheriff’s office said the scene was secured and there was no threat to public safety.
Additional information about the warrant being served, including whom federal authorities were seeking or why the marshals were operating in the area, was not immediately released.
