A peaceful demonstration is planned Wednesday at Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park, with organizers calling on participants to show their support for the park while following park rules and keeping the event family-friendly.
The demonstration is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 12 at Santa Elena Canyon. Organizers said national media are expected to attend.
“This will be a non-violent, family-friendly, First Amendment demonstration to show our love for the Big Bend,” organizers said in an announcement promoting the event.
Participants are being asked to remain mindful of National Park Service rules and regulations. Organizers said harassment, intoxication, threats, violence and aggression will not be tolerated and emphasized that participants should “leave no trace.”
Shuttle transportation is planned from Terlingua and Marathon. A shuttle is scheduled to leave Far Flung Outdoor Center in Terlingua at 8 a.m. A separate shuttle provided by Hidden Dagger is scheduled to depart from the French Grocer in Marathon at 7 a.m., with participants asked to RSVP.
Organizers are encouraging demonstrators to bring creative, family-friendly signs.
Following the demonstration, a gathering is planned at Temple of the Bird in Terlingua, where food will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Organizers said postcards and materials for writing elected representatives will also be available.
Participants are invited to bring sign-making materials, food to share and musical instruments.
