The DPS Troopers Foundation is auctioning a West Texas aoudad hunt to raise money for a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper who suffered life-changing injuries in a head-on crash near Alpine.
The foundation announced its “Hunt for a Hero” fundraiser to benefit Trooper Zachary Vasquez and his family as he continues intensive rehabilitation following the June 23 crash.
Vasquez, a DPS canine trooper, and his K-9 partner, Guido, were involved in the collision after another vehicle crossed into their lane, according to the foundation.
Vasquez survived but sustained serious injuries that have required extensive rehabilitation. The foundation said he recently reached a significant milestone in his recovery by taking his first 30 steps since the crash.
The fundraiser has a goal of raising $10,000 through an auction for an aoudad hunt donated by Mellon Creek Outfitters. Proceeds will benefit Vasquez through the DPS Troopers Foundation’s Help A Hero Program, which provides assistance to Texas troopers and their families during times of need.
The winning bidder will receive the West Texas hunting experience while contributing to Vasquez’s recovery and his family’s needs.
“Those 30 steps represent courage,” the foundation said in announcing the fundraiser. “They represent determination. And they remind us that there are many more steps ahead.”
The foundation is also encouraging people who do not hunt to share information about the auction with others who may be interested in bidding.
