A Terrell County sheriff’s deputy encountered an unexpected visitor while on patrol the morning after Fourth of July celebrations.
Terrell County Sheriff Thaddeus Cleveland shared video captured by Deputy Gonzales showing a black bear moving through the brush near Sanderson. The sheriff’s office posted the footage on social media Saturday, noting that the animal appeared to be making its own rounds after the holiday festivities.
“While on patrol this morning, one of our deputies came across an unexpected visitor — a bear in town!” Cleveland wrote.
The sheriff’s office reminded residents to give wildlife plenty of space, never approach or feed a bear, and report sightings if necessary.
Black bears are not uncommon in parts of West Texas, particularly in areas near the Big Bend region, where populations have gradually expanded in recent decades. Sightings in and around communities occasionally occur as bears travel in search of food, water, or new territory.
The video, credited to Deputy Gonzales, drew attention online as residents reacted to the rare sighting.
“Just another reminder that around here, you never know what a morning patrol might bring,” Cleveland wrote.
