Peaceful demonstration planned in Marathon over proposed Big Bend border wall

A group of Big Bend residents is planning a peaceful demonstration in Marathon on July 5 to protest proposed border wall construction in the region and raise awareness about its potential impacts on local communities, history and wildlife habitat.

According to organizers, the demonstration is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. and continue throughout the day at the intersection of U.S. Highway 90 and U.S. Highway 385 in Marathon.

Promotional materials for the event encourage participants to bring signs and posters and describe the gathering as an effort to “protect the Big Bend region’s livelihoods, history, and habitat.”

The event is being held during the Independence Day holiday weekend and is framed by organizers as a patriotic demonstration in support of preserving the character and natural resources of the Big Bend region.

Opposition to border wall construction has grown in parts of West Texas in recent months, particularly following federal plans to expand barriers in areas near Big Bend National Park and communities throughout the region. Critics have argued that additional wall construction could harm wildlife migration corridors, affect tourism and alter the area’s landscape, while supporters contend that barriers are necessary to enhance border security.

Organizers said the demonstration will remain peaceful and invited members of the public to attend throughout the day.
