Visitors heading to Fort Davis for the Independence Day holiday will have multiple opportunities to experience history, demonstrations and community events as the Fort Davis National Historic Site hosts a week of programs from June 30 through July 5 as part of the nationwide Freedom 250 commemoration.
The schedule includes guided fort tours, ranger programs, small arms demonstrations, artillery talks and special Fourth of July activities.
Programs begin June 30 with a fort tour at 11 a.m. followed by a ranger program at 2 p.m. in the fort auditorium.
On July 1 and July 2, visitors can attend small arms demonstrations at 11 a.m. and artillery talks at 2 p.m., both held on the fort parade grounds.
Activities on July 3 include an 11 a.m. fort tour and a 2 p.m. ranger program in the fort auditorium.
Independence Day events on July 4 begin with the annual parade at 10 a.m. on State Street in downtown Fort Davis. Additional activities include a gun salute at 2 p.m. on the fort parade grounds and the ceremonial lowering of the garrison flag from 4 to 4:30 p.m.
The celebration concludes July 5 with a small arms demonstration at 11 a.m., followed by a vintage baseball game at 2 p.m. played under 1880s rules. Members of the public are invited to participate. Organizers recommend participants bring water, sun protection, tennis shoes and team spirit. Equipment will be provided. The day will conclude with the lowering of the garrison flag from 4 to 4:30 p.m.
