The Big Bend Amateur Radio Club will host its 51st annual ARRL Field Day on June 27-28, inviting residents and visitors to see amateur radio operators in action during the nationwide emergency communications exercise.
The event will be held at the Double Diamond Pavilion, located approximately six miles south of Alpine on U.S. Highway 118.
ARRL Field Day is the largest annual operating event for amateur radio operators in North America. During the 24-hour exercise, participants set up temporary stations and make radio contacts across the country and around the world while demonstrating how amateur radio can provide reliable communications during emergencies when conventional systems may be unavailable.
Visitors will have the opportunity to observe radio equipment in operation, learn about the hobby from local amateur radio operators and see large portable antenna systems used to establish long-distance communications.
The event is designed to showcase both the recreational and public service aspects of amateur radio, which has long played a role in disaster response, severe weather reporting and emergency communications.
The Big Bend Amateur Radio Club’s Field Day is free and open to the public. Organizers encourage anyone interested in communications, emergency preparedness or technology to stop by and learn more about amateur radio throughout the weekend.
