A 29-year-old firefighter died and two others were injured Sunday evening while responding to a residential trailer fire in Odessa, according to city officials.
Crews with Odessa Fire Rescue were dispatched around 4:59 p.m. to the 1900 block of South Westcliff Road, where firefighters encountered rapidly deteriorating conditions while operating at the scene, the department said in a news release.
Three firefighters suffered injuries and were transported to Medical Center Hospital for treatment. One firefighter later died from his injuries.
The firefighter was identified as Lt. Isai Huerta, 29, who had served with Odessa Fire Rescue for nine years.
“Isai was a huge part of our organization, a true firefighter,” Odessa Fire Rescue Chief Jason Cotton said in a statement. “He was always happy, always willing to help, and he truly enjoyed the job.”
Odessa Mayor Cal Hendrick called Huerta’s death a devastating loss for the community.
“Tonight, Odessa has lost a hero,” Hendrick said in a statement. “Firefighter Isai Huerta dedicated his life to protecting others, and his sacrifice will never be forgotten.”
The two other firefighters injured in the blaze did not suffer life-threatening injuries and are receiving care and support, officials said.
The Texas State Association of Fire Fighters is leading the investigation into the incident. Representatives from the International Association of Fire Fighters were expected to arrive in Odessa to assist, according to the city.
Odessa Fire Rescue said a press conference is planned Monday to provide additional details on the investigation.
