Midland police respond to active shooter incident; multiple people hospitalized

Police responded to an active shooter incident in Midland on Friday morning after officers heard gunfire coming from a building in the southwestern part of the city, authorities said.

Multiple people were taken to local and regional hospitals, according to Midland Police Chief Greg Snow, though officials did not immediately release details on the number of victims or the severity of injuries.

Snow said in a social media post that officers responding to reports of gunfire quickly secured the area after hearing shots from a building in southwest Midland.

“Armored units were deployed, and partner agencies assisted in the response,” Snow said, adding that efforts to bring the standoff “to a safe resolution” were ongoing.

Midland Strategic Communications Officer Stuart Doreen said partner agencies were assisting law enforcement as authorities worked to end the standoff.

The city said the incident was occurring near Industrial Avenue and Wall Street and urged residents to avoid the area while emergency personnel responded.

“At this time, public safety personnel are actively responding, and we ask the public to avoid the area until further notice,” the city said in a statement posted to social media. “Our priority is the safety of our residents and first responders.”

Authorities had not immediately released information about a suspect, possible motive or whether the shooter remained barricaded.

The situation remained active Friday afternoon and the investigation was ongoing.
