City crews worked through the night to stabilize a damaged water main on South Gallego Avenue after a major leak was reported Thursday afternoon, according to a public service announcement issued by the city.
The City of Alpine said utility workers responded immediately after receiving reports of a water leak and found that a compromised 6-inch water main was causing problems. Officials said high pressure in the line and the inability to isolate that section of pipe complicated repair efforts.
Technicians were ultimately able to secure a clamp on the damaged section of pipe and began restoring the system to normal operating pressure early Friday, the city said.
Officials emphasized that the current repair is temporary and will remain in place until crews can install an isolating valve and replace the affected section of line.
Water pressure is expected to continue improving as the system stabilizes, according to the city.
The trench at the repair site will remain open, and South Gallego Avenue will stay closed until permanent repairs are completed.
City officials thanked residents for their patience and said restoring uninterrupted water service remains a top priority.
