Historic tax credit workshop set for Alpine after downtown district earns national designation

Property owners and residents interested in preserving downtown Alpine’s historic character will have an opportunity to learn about historic tax credits during a free public workshop next month.

Historic Alpine, in partnership with the City of Alpine and Post Oak Preservation Solutions, will host a Historic Tax Credit Workshop from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. June 3 at the Alpine Civic Center, located at 801 W. Holland Ave.

The workshop follows downtown Alpine’s recent designation on the National Register of Historic Places, a move local preservation advocates say opens new opportunities for revitalization, investment and preservation within the city’s historic core.

According to organizers, owners of qualifying historic buildings within the newly recognized district may be eligible for state and federal historic tax credits covering up to 45% of rehabilitation costs.

The workshop will be led by Ellis Mumford-Russell of Post Oak Preservation Solutions and will provide an overview of the new historic district designation and how tax credits may apply to local properties.

Topics scheduled for discussion include what the historic district designation means for downtown Alpine, which buildings may qualify for tax credits, how historic tax credits work, eligible rehabilitation projects and opportunities available to downtown property owners.

Organizers said the event is free and open to the public.

Historic Alpine said the workshop is intended to help property owners better understand how preservation incentives can support economic development while maintaining Alpine’s architectural and cultural identity.

Downtown Alpine was recently added to the National Register of Historic Places, a federal designation recognizing historically significant districts, sites and structures. Preservation advocates say the listing could help spur investment in historic buildings while preserving the character of the city’s downtown area.
