Alpine Downtown Historic District Added to National Register of Historic Places

The Alpine Downtown Historic District has been added to the National Register of Historic Places, marking a milestone more than 140 years in the making for the city’s historic core.

The designation follows efforts by the City of Alpine and preservation partners to document and recognize the district’s historic significance. According to Visit Alpine, Texas, the city used Hotel Occupancy Tax funds to partner with Post Oak Preservation in securing the designation.

City leaders and preservation advocates said the recognition reflects decades of history in downtown Alpine, which has long served as a commercial and cultural center for the region.

The National Register of Historic Places is the federal government’s official list of districts, sites, buildings, structures and objects deemed worthy of preservation for their historical significance.

Supporters say the designation could further strengthen heritage tourism and preservation efforts in Alpine, while highlighting the city’s longstanding role in Far West Texas history.
