Weekend favorite: La Birrieria keeps Alpine fed from longtime home at Skelton’s Runway

For Alpine residents craving birria, quesabirria or a hearty plate of chilaquiles, a familiar stop has become part of the local food scene: La Birrieria at Skelton’s Runway.

Operating from 300 S. Cockrell St., La Birrieria has built a following by regularly serving authentic Mexican dishes from its longtime location at Skelton’s Runway, though hours can vary depending on the day and schedule.

On Saturday, the business invited customers to stop by for a menu featuring chicken tinga tostadas, quesitacos, quesabirria, birria tacos, birria tortas, birria ramen and chilaquiles, along with aguas frescas including lemonade and horchata.

The menu reflected the kind of comfort food that has helped make birria — a slow-cooked, richly seasoned meat dish traditionally served in tacos or consommé — increasingly popular across Texas and beyond. At La Birrieria, customers can find several takes on the specialty, from traditional tacos to ramen infused with birria flavors.

The location at Skelton’s Runway has become a regular destination for locals looking for casual dining options and comfort food with bold flavors. While the eatery frequently serves customers from the same location, operating days and hours may change, making social media updates a common way for customers to check availability.

Saturday’s featured menu included chicken tinga tostadas for $4, quesitacos and quesabirria for $15, chilaquiles for $16, birria tacos for $15, birria tortas for $13 and birria ramen for $12. Thirty-two-ounce aguas frescas were listed for $4.

In promoting the menu, the business highlighted its food photography with a playful note emphasizing that the featured images were “real pictures, not AI.”
