Marfa students pursue lifeguard certification to support community swimming safety

Several students from Marfa High School are completing intensive lifeguard certification training through a collaborative effort involving regional workforce, education and emergency response partners.

The training program is being coordinated through Workforce Solutions Borderplex, with support from the City of Marfa, the American Red Cross, Sul Ross State University instructor Kara Poole and Marfa Independent School District, according to a social media post from Marfa Shorthorns.

Students participating in the program are completing 16 hours of online coursework and 21 hours of in-water rescue and first aid training while meeting extensive swimming and lifesaving skill requirements.

The certification process also includes demanding evening sessions. On one recent night, students trained from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. as part of the physical and mental preparation required to earn certification.

The effort aims to help ensure Marfa residents continue to have access to safe swimming, recreation and wellness opportunities during the summer months.

Organizers said the students’ work ethic, discipline and commitment reflect a desire to serve the community by helping provide lifeguard coverage for local pools and recreational activities.

Community members were encouraged to recognize participating students for their leadership and willingness to contribute to public safety in Marfa.
