Big Bend Ranch State Park, Alpine Library Launch Summer Programs for Kids

Kids in Alpine will have a chance to explore Indigenous culture, paleontology and the natural history of the Big Bend this summer through a new educational partnership between Big Bend Ranch State Park and the Alpine Public Library.

The summer library programs, geared toward children ages 5 to 12, will take place at the Alpine Public Library, 805 W. Avenue E, and feature hands-on activities designed to introduce participants to the region’s history and environment.

The first event, “Indigenous Rock Art,” is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 20. Participants will learn about rock art found throughout the Big Bend region and create their own pictographs.

A second session, “Yucca Rope Program,” will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 17. The program will focus on Indigenous rope-making techniques using yucca, a plant historically used throughout the region.

The summer series will conclude with a “Fossil Dig” program at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, where children can learn about paleontology and search for fossils of their own.

According to the Alpine Public Library, the programs are intended to give children an interactive way to learn about the natural and cultural history of the Big Bend region during the summer months.
