Texas Department of Public Safety troopers recently completed an intensive endurance and area familiarization hike in the Guadalupe Mountains as part of ongoing search and rescue preparedness efforts, according to the agency.
The training involved personnel from DPS offices in El Paso and Alpine and was designed to prepare troopers to assist the National Park Service in emergency response operations across the rugged terrain of the Guadalupe Mountains.
According to DPS, participating troopers covered approximately 18 miles in five hours, climbed more than 3,000 feet in elevation and logged more than 20,000 steps during the hike.
The agency said the exercise tested the physical endurance and readiness of participating personnel while helping familiarize troopers with the region’s challenging landscape.
DPS officials said the training is intended to ensure troopers remain mission-ready to assist communities and partner agencies in difficult terrain, particularly during search and rescue operations in remote areas of West Texas.
The Guadalupe Mountains, home to some of Texas’ most rugged wilderness, frequently draw hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, occasionally requiring emergency assistance and coordinated rescue efforts.
