The McDonald Observatory is offering a “Telescopes 101” class this summer aimed at helping beginners learn the basics of using and selecting telescopes.
According to the observatory, the class is designed for people who may have received a telescope as a gift but are unsure how to use it, as well as prospective buyers trying to determine what type of telescope best suits their needs.
The sessions will cover telescope and mount basics, techniques for locating objects in the night sky, the difference between aperture and magnification, and an overview of eyepieces and telescope accessories.
McDonald Observatory said its May 27 session is nearly full, though additional sessions later this summer still have availability.
The observatory, located near Fort Davis in West Texas, is known for its public star parties, educational programming and astronomical research.
