Rally Opposing Border Wall Planned at Texas Capitol

Organizers are planning a rally opposing border wall expansion at the Texas Capitol later this month, highlighting a long-running divide between many border residents and state leaders pushing for additional barrier construction.

According to promotional materials circulating online, the “Texas Says No Border Wall” rally and press conference is scheduled for 9 a.m. May 19 on the south steps of the Texas Capitol in downtown Austin.

The event comes as Texas continues investing billions into border security initiatives through Operation Lone Star, including state-funded wall construction, troop deployments and expanded law enforcement operations along the U.S.-Mexico border.

While border security measures remain popular with many voters elsewhere in Texas, opposition to physical barriers has often been especially strong within border communities themselves — including among Republicans, Democrats, ranchers, business owners and local officials who actually live along the border region.

Critics of expanded wall construction argue the barriers disrupt wildlife migration, damage private property rights, interfere with cross-border commerce and divide communities with long-standing cultural and family ties spanning both sides of the Rio Grande. Some South Texas landowners have also opposed the use of eminent domain tied to wall projects.

Supporters of barriers argue they help deter illegal crossings, drug trafficking and human smuggling operations.

The rally announcement did not list scheduled speakers or sponsoring organizations beyond the social media account promoting the event.
