A new makers hub aimed at supporting West Texas artists and craftspeople is planned for Marfa, according to an announcement shared this week by Mudlab Marfa.
The project, called Surber ADE, will feature an 8,000-square-foot facility across from Lowe’s Market on U.S. Highway 67. Organizers said the space is designed to provide a place where individuals can work, connect and sell their creations.
Plans for the facility include eight individual studio spaces, retail rental areas and exhibition space centered around a 2,500-square-foot event area. The central space is expected to host activities ranging from art exhibits and guest lectures to movie screenings and tattoo conventions.
According to the announcement, each studio will be equipped for heavy-duty creative work and include features such as high ceilings, double doors, concrete floors and sound-dampening insulation. Studios also are planned to include split-unit heating and air conditioning systems, skylights and operable windows for natural light.
The facility is expected to support equipment requiring 220-volt power, with optional three-phase power connections for tools such as kilns, welders and table saws.
Mudlab Marfa said work on the project has been underway for more than a year and described the hub as an opportunity to expand creative workspace options in the community.
Organizers also thanked Mark and Jenny Htown for their support and vision for the project.
