Big Bend National Park and the Big Bend Natural History Association have announced the return of the park’s Artist-in-Residence series, beginning this week with watercolor artist Larry Hughes.
According to the association, 303 artists applied for the 2026 program, with six artists selected to spend two weeks each in the park this summer.
Hughes, the first artist in this year’s series, will lead a free public watercolor workshop from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday at the Panther Junction Visitor Center.
The program will include a presentation on how art connects people with national parks and showcase how different artists interpret park landscapes. Hughes will also demonstrate a “15-minute, fail-proof” watercolor technique before participants create their own works.
The workshop is open to all ages, and materials will be provided.
