Sul Ross State University will host a bone marrow donor registration event April 28, offering students and community members a chance to join the national registry of potential donors.
The event, titled “Swab-a-Palooza,” is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the University Center Mall and is open to the public. It is organized by the university’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in collaboration with Earl Young’s Team and the Office of Civic Engagement and Student Assistance.
Participants can register as potential bone marrow and stem cell donors through a simple cheek swab that takes only a few minutes. Organizers said the event aims to increase awareness and participation in donor registries for patients with blood cancers and disorders.
“Through this event, we’re not just coming together, we are showing up for people we may never meet,” said Samantha Bustos, a member of the advisory committee and softball player. “A simple swab can become someone’s second chance at life.”
To be eligible, individuals must be between 18 and 55 years old and in good general health. Additional screening information will be available on-site.
Organizers said the drive reflects a broader effort to promote civic engagement and student leadership while supporting life-saving initiatives. Food will also be available during the event, with Maverick Bank providing sausage wraps for attendees.
“This is an opportunity for students at our university and community members to change someone’s life,” said Clayton Garcia, associate athletic director for compliance and advisor for the committee. “If one person can save one life, then it’s all worth it.”
University officials encouraged eligible students, faculty, staff and community members to participate.
