Sul Ross State University has named Minerva Gonzales, associate professor and director of its nursing program, as the recipient of the 2025–2026 Outstanding Teacher Award.
Gonzales was selected by her faculty peers and recognized for her commitment to teaching excellence, student success and leadership, university officials said.
“Congratulations to Dr. Minerva Gonzales on being selected by her peers,” said Bernie Cantens, provost. “This honor reflects her exceptional commitment to student success and academic excellence and celebrates the lasting impact of her teaching, mentorship and dedication to inspiring the next generation of nurses.”
Colleagues cited Gonzales’ ability to balance leadership responsibilities with direct instruction and mentorship. One nominator described her as embodying excellence in teaching while managing the demands of leading the nursing program and supporting students, faculty and staff.
Students also praised her teaching approach in surveys, highlighting her patience, attentiveness and ability to create a supportive learning environment that builds confidence and understanding.
Gonzales will receive a $2,000 award and a plaque at a faculty awards ceremony next fall. As the university’s Outstanding Teacher Award recipient, she will also be nominated for the Texas State University System Board of Regents’ Teaching Award and the Minnie Piper Stevens Teaching Award.
