Residents will have multiple opportunities in May to dispose of large household junk and debris at no cost during Brewster County’s 2026 countywide cleanup event.
The effort, organized by Brewster County, is aimed at helping residents clear out bulky waste while promoting a cleaner environment across the region.
Cleanup events are scheduled for three locations. The first will take place Saturday, May 2, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Road & Bridge Yard on FM 170 in Terlingua. Two additional events will be held Saturday, May 9, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Alpine at the landfill located about 8 miles east on U.S. Highway 90, and in Marathon at the Road & Bridge Yard on North Albert Street.
County trucks will be on-site to accept and haul away items to the landfill, with a separate trailer available for tire disposal. The service is free for all Brewster County residents.
Accepted items include furniture, mattresses, appliances, water heaters, carpet, scrap lumber and metal, building materials, yard waste and tires. Officials noted that tires must be kept separate from other debris and removed from rims before drop-off. Appliances containing refrigerant must be certified as properly drained prior to disposal.
The county will not accept commercial waste, car batteries, petroleum products, pesticides, free liquids or hazardous materials such as asbestos and paint. Dump trailers containing dirt or debris will also not be accepted at the Terlingua and Marathon sites.
Officials encouraged residents to take advantage of the program and help keep Brewster County clean.
