An Alpine High School student has been named the winner of a local Dark Skies coloring book contest, part of an effort to promote awareness about protecting the region’s night sky.
Nancy Velez took first place in the contest, earning a $250 prize. Abraham Pando finished second and received $100, while Lula Keenan placed third and was awarded $50.
Organizers said 32 entries were submitted by Alpine Independent School District high school art students, making the judging process competitive. July Stokes and Stephen Hummel served as judges for the contest.
The student artwork will be compiled into a Dark Skies coloring book aimed at educating elementary school students about the importance of preserving dark skies, a key environmental and cultural asset in the Big Bend region.
Organizers also credited art teacher Ms. Vega for helping guide students and bring the project to completion.
The initiative highlights ongoing community efforts to raise awareness about light pollution and protect the area’s internationally recognized dark skies.
