Jeff Davis County commissioners have postponed consideration of a proposed Chispa Road reconstruction project after a special meeting raised liability concerns and questions about a plan to offer the work to the county as a gift.
Officials said the discussion focused on the county road project and the need for more information before taking action. While the proposal was framed as a no-cost project for the county, multiple speakers and officials cautioned that long-term obligations and risks could still fall on taxpayers, emphasizing that there is no true “free lunch.”
Concerns discussed included potential legal exposure, future maintenance costs, and impacts to private property and county infrastructure. Residents also raised issues related to safety, environmental effects and possible consequences for tourism and the local economy.
Commissioners agreed to table the item until additional details are clarified and liability questions are addressed.
