Midland College to host West Texas Symposium of History on April 11

The Midland Texas Historical Society is inviting the public to attend a free symposium highlighting the history of the Permian Basin this Saturday at Midland College.

The West Texas Symposium of History is scheduled for April 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Room 101 of the Marie Hall Academic Building. The event will feature a series of presentations exploring the people, places and events that have shaped Midland and the surrounding region.

The program will begin with registration and a light breakfast at 8:30 a.m., followed by opening remarks at 9 a.m.

Scheduled speakers include Todd Houck, Ph.D., presenting “A History of the Midland College Foundation”; Sarah January, M.A., discussing “These Rocks Cry Out: First Baptist Church of Midland, TX”; and John Gaspard, Ph.D., presenting “Tall City Champions.”

Lunch is set for 11:15 a.m., followed by a presentation of the honors award at 12:15 p.m. The final presentation, “Midland in Context: Place, People, and Transformation,” will be delivered by Ariana Blackwell and Zing Len at 12:40 p.m. Closing remarks are scheduled for 1:25 p.m.

Honors student poster presentations will also be available in Room 105 of the Marie Hall Academic Building.

Organizers say the symposium is designed to engage the community and highlight Midland’s rich historical legacy. Admission is free and open to the public.
