The historic Palace Theater in Marfa is under contract and poised for a revival, with new plans calling for the long-dormant venue to reopen as a single-screen art house cinema and cultural hub.
According to social media posts from the group behind the project, the Palace — which first opened in 1905 as an opera house and later operated as an Art Deco movie theater — is expected to be restored as a community-focused space centered on film, arts and local engagement.
Plans for the venue include an 80-seat theater featuring curated independent, international, repertory and regional films. The project also envisions a bar, lounge and retail space open to the public regardless of screening times.
In addition to film exhibition, the developers outlined ambitions for a production soundstage and event space, as well as post-production facilities designed to support filmmakers working in the region. The proposal also includes short-term accommodations for visiting artists and a filmmaker-in-residence program.
Organizers said the revitalized Palace aims to host film festivals and educational programming, including workshops, student initiatives and grant opportunities for regional filmmakers.
The theater, which has been inactive for decades, is described by organizers as a historic gathering place that once served as the only theater between El Paso and San Antonio. Its reopening effort is being framed as both a cultural investment and a community-driven project.
