Ojinaga officials uphold decision against Sotelo Mata monument, call for cultural policy review

The Ojinaga City Council has unanimously reaffirmed its decision not to install a proposed monument honoring Víctor Sotelo Mata following an extraordinary session held to hear input from members of the local cultural community.

According to a statement from the Secretaría del H. Ayuntamiento, officials convened the session under a philosophy of open governance and full representation of residents, allowing cultural promoters to present detailed arguments regarding the monument proposal.

After deliberation, council members voted unanimously to respect the decision made in a prior session, confirming that the monument will not be installed. Officials also announced plans to convene a commission to develop a Municipal Cultural Regulation framework aimed at providing clearer guidance for similar matters in the future.

City officials emphasized that the decision does not reflect opposition to honoring distinguished residents of Ojinaga. Instead, they reiterated their openness to recognizing notable figures through appropriate and structured processes.

The statement was issued by Jesús Arturo Macías Madrid, secretary of the Ojinaga City Council.
