The Jeff Davis County Library will host author H. McCommons on Wednesday, March 18, for a presentation about his book Feather Wars, a historical account exploring the complex history of bird protection in the United States.
The event is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. and will include a discussion of the book, which examines the background of bird conservation in America and the unlikely coalition that emerged to protect birds from widespread hunting and exploitation.
According to organizers, Feather Wars traces the efforts of dedicated activists — including hunters, bird lovers, villains and conflicted figures — who helped shape the modern bird protection movement. The book explores how the fight to conserve birds brought together a diverse group of advocates whose work eventually influenced national conservation efforts.
The presentation will highlight the evolution of bird conservation in the United States, from the era when passenger pigeons and other species were hunted heavily to the development of modern endangered species protections.
The program is free and sponsored by the Friends of the Jeff Davis Library as part of the library’s ongoing effort to celebrate local authors and educational programming.
Copies of Feather Wars will be available for purchase through a partnership with Front Street Books of Alpine, and McCommons will be available to sign books following the presentation.
