The Marfa Independent School District board declined to appoint State District Judge Genie Wright to a vacant trustee seat during a special meeting Wednesday night, according to reporting by the Big Bend Sentinel.
Wright, the only Marfa resident to submit a letter of interest, was nominated by board member Stela Fuentez, whose January resignation created the vacancy, but the motion failed for lack of a second. Fuentez continues to hold the seat until a replacement is named.
Trustees discussed Wright’s interest in closed session and invited her in for part of the discussion, but no public deliberation followed when the board returned to open session. An agenda item to consider calling a special election to fill board vacancies was tabled until the board’s March meeting.
Wright told the Sentinel on Thursday she had not been informed of the decision by district officials. Board President Philp Boyd and Interim Superintendent Oscar Alferez could not immediately be reached for comment, the newspaper reported.
