McDonald Observatory Hiring Part-Time Program Assistants for Star Parties and Visitor Programs

The McDonald Observatory is seeking part-time Program Assistants to work at the Frank N. Bash Visitors Center, offering a unique opportunity for science enthusiasts to engage with visitors from around the world.

According to the posting, the role includes helping operate telescopes during public Star Parties, answering questions about astronomy and the observatory, assisting with visitor check-in and seating, and supporting event setup and cleanup. Some assistants may also present short talks or facilitate hands-on science activities.

The position typically involves 9–12 hours per week, with evening and weekend work required. Programs are held year-round, primarily on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday nights, with additional events during peak seasons.

Applicants should have basic familiarity with telescope operation and astronomy concepts, strong communication skills, and the ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions at the observatory’s roughly 6,900-foot elevation in the Davis Mountains. Teaching experience, advanced astronomy knowledge, or bilingual abilities are considered a plus.

The observatory, part of the University of Texas at Austin, encourages interested candidates to learn more and apply through its website.
