Wintry Mix Possible in Big Bend Region Early Next Week

Parts of the Big Bend region could see a wintry mix early next week as a weather system moves across West Texas, according to the National Weather Service office in Midland–Odessa.

Forecasters say an upper-level low pressure system is expected to move in from Mexico beginning Sunday night, increasing the chances of precipitation across the region. Cold air already in place could allow rain to mix with snow, particularly at higher elevations in the Big Bend.

Areas below about 4,000 feet in elevation are expected to remain warm enough to see mostly rain. However, locations above 4,000 feet — including portions of the Davis Mountains and surrounding higher terrain — could experience a rain-and-snow mix or periods of wet snow. At this time, forecasters say any snow accumulation is expected to be minimal.

While confidence is increasing that precipitation will occur, some uncertainty remains. Meteorologists are still working to determine the exact timing of when precipitation will begin and how widespread it will be across the region.

Residents, especially those in higher elevations or planning travel through mountain areas, are encouraged to monitor forecasts and prepare for changing conditions as the system approaches.
