Community to Gather in Alpine for Martin Luther King Jr. Remembrance Event

Local residents, elected officials, faith leaders, educators, and community members will come together in Alpine later this month to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through a public reading of his historic “Letter from Birmingham Jail.”

The remembrance event is scheduled for Sunday, January 18, at 2 p.m. at the Brewster County Courthouse Gazebo in Alpine. Organizers say the gathering is intended to reflect on King’s moral leadership during a period of intense national division and to reaffirm a shared commitment to justice, peace, and civil rights.

Participants will take turns reading passages from King’s 1963 letter, a foundational document of the civil rights movement written while he was jailed for protesting segregation. The reading is designed as a brief but meaningful ceremony focused on reflection and collective remembrance.

Members of the public who wish to participate by reading a passage are invited to contact the event organizers in advance. The event is open to all, and attendees are encouraged to take part respectfully.

The gathering emphasizes King’s enduring message that progress toward justice requires persistence, courage, and moral clarity—principles organizers say remain relevant today.
