UT Permian Basin Names Chris Softley Head Football Coach

The University of Texas Permian Basin has named Chris Softley as the third head football coach in the history of the Falcons program, university officials announced this week.

Softley joins UTPB from Lubbock Christian School, where he earned statewide recognition as a Texas Coach of the Year and led his team to a state championship. University officials highlighted his championship experience and West Texas roots as key factors in the hire.

Softley was formally introduced during a campus press conference that drew strong local support, including high school football coaches from across the Permian Basin.

UTPB officials said Softley’s background in program building and player development aligns with the university’s long-term vision for Falcons football as the program continues to grow within NCAA Division II competition.

“Championship experience. West Texas roots. Big goals,” the university said in a statement announcing the hire.

The Falcons football program launched in 2016 and competes in the Lone Star Conference. University leaders said they are focused on sustained growth and competitiveness under Softley’s leadership.
